LOFT RESIDENCE – Providence, RI

NCA designed the 3,500 square feet loft. To define the spaces in the residential project, a diagonal line was drawn along the back third of the loft to divide general living areas. Private spaces were defined on the south side of the line. The remaining two-thirds of the space are an open plan. The demarcation line evolved into a wall to house appliances on the kitchen side, closets on the back side and storage above. Built-in seating, bookcases, and hidden panels in the media provide storage. The guest bedroom and a Murphy bed are located behind the kitchen.

CHURCH OF ST. GREGORY THE GREAT – Portsmouth Abbey – Portsmouth, RI

NCA restored the church designed by Pietro Belluschi in 1960. The project reinforced the structure, refurbished the 60' spire, improved energy efficiency, and added chandeliers without altering Belluschi's aesthetic. Extensive water damage warranted that all 136 of the 28' clerestory frames be replaced with old growth timber. To ensure the original glass pattern was not lost, 2,960 pieces were labeled, cataloged, removed, cleaned, and reassembled. The restoration project earned a 2009 AIA RI Award for Historic Preservation, a 2013 AIA CT Award for Historic Preservation, a 2014 Faith & Form Honor Award for Religious Architecture Restoration and a 2016 AIA New England Honor Award for Preservation.

The new 17, 000 square-foot Parish Hall establishes an axial relationship with the church to create a consolidated campus. The new building cuts into the hill to take advantage of the grade. Column-free multipurpose space for services and events is on the main level and classrooms that open to a courtyard are on the lower level. Moveable partitions, separate entries, direct access to outdoors work in tandem to accommodate a wide range of programs. Daylight harvesting techniques, high efficiency boilers and a wind turbine electric generator provide sustainable energy for the complex.

NCA designed Interlink, the Northeast's first Intermodal Transportation Center connecting air travelers with trains, buses, passengers and rental car transportation. Interlink positions Rhode Island as a leader in sustainable development by expanding public transportation, fueling economic recovery and offering future development opportunities, placing T.F.GreenAirport among the top airports in New England's highly competitive market. The Rhode Island Airport Corporation and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation directed the program and oversaw construction of this $267 million project. The multi-tiered collaborative effort revitalizes a blighted airport parcel and features a dynamic elevated glass-enclosed Skywalk that rises 35 feet above the ground and spans a quarter-mile. Passengers arriving at T.F.GreenAirport enjoy an unimpeded six-minute connection to the train station, rental car facility, and parking garage on moving walkways that transport travelers 100 feet per minute.

NCA transformed the 1876 property into a boutique hotel. The design replicated the original porch, replaced the roof and windows, and reconfigured the first floor to accommodate a new commercial kitchen, reception area, and office. 12 guest suites were remodeled with gas fireplaces and spa bathrooms. The parking was reorganized and two-thirds of the yard was reclaimed for a perennial garden, stone walls, walking paths and outdoor fireplace. Vernon Court was designed by Carrère and Hastings in 1898. NCA designed a set of As Built record drawings of the structure and worked with the client to obtain permitting and mechanical layouts for the National Museum of American Illustration. The French Chateau's stucco edifice is remarkable for its monumental scale and beautiful gardens. The tall ceilings and classical details lend an elegant backdrop to the museum's staggering collection of American Illustration Art.

AUDRAIN AUTO MUSEUM – Newport, RI

Noted architect Bruce Price designed the Audrain Building in Newport, Rhode Island that was constructed in 1903. The commercial building represents one of four Gilded Age buildings that form an architecturally significant block on Bellevue Avenue. The three adjoining historic buildings include the Travers Block designed by Richard Morris Hunt; the Newport Casino designed by McKim, Mead, and White; and the King Block designed by Perkins and Betton. Price drew inspiration from the Florentine Renaissance to create an iconic two-story edifice defined by broad arched windows that rise through both stories and a roofline distinguished by white terra-cotta balustrade with lion sculptures. The Audrain building is faced in red brick with jewel toned terra cotta trim that accentuates the entry, bays and roofline. Street-level terra-cotta ornamentation is relatively restrained but increases at the arched second floor windows and cornice. The first floor was originally designed to feature six retail shops and the second floor featured 11 offices.

THE NEWPORT BAY CLUB AT PERRY MILL – Newport, RI

Perry Mill was built in 1835. The landmark with open floor plans, large windows, and solid masonry construction, was among the first to be successfully adapted for mixed use. NCA transformed the mill into a timeshare resort featuring 36 suites, and commercial space for restaurant, nightclub and retail arcade. The plan called for reconstructing the two-story gabled roof with heavy timber framing and planking to duplicate the original shape. A clerestory screen preserves the character allowing the insertion of two levels of private decks for the suites. The arcade retains the mill's original wood planking, yellow-pine beams, and rough-cut granite. A central brick paved corridor creates a promenade with full-height glass storefronts lining either side of the space. The project earned AIA/New England Design Excellence Award.

Valley Affordable Housing and Newport Housing Authority selected NCA to design Phase IV of the Newport Heights public housing. The project represents an ambitious revitalization plan for Newport's urban North End neighborhood. Phase IV is comprised of 44 affordable-housing units. NCA designed an art and music center for a private high school campus comprised of small buildings situated on grounds designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. LOEB VISITORS CENTER AT TOURO SYNAGOGUE – Newport, RI

When the Secretary of State visited Newport, Rhode Island in 1790, Touro Synagogue was among the classical buildings from which he drew inspiration. Secretary Thomas Jefferson admired Peter Harrison's 1763 design replete with portico entry, arched windows, metalwork, balustrades, English paneling and ionic columns. Touro Synagogue remains the oldest extant synagogue in the country and serves the congregation organized in 1658. In 1946 Touro Synagogue was named a National Historic Site, and in 1966 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The 45,000 square foot Gilded Age mansion was divided into six residential condominiums. NCA was retained to transform four of the units into a single residence. The west wing was completely renovated using contemporary detailing and an open floor plan.

NCA created an addition for the 1760 Georgian mansion that allowed the inn to expand from nine to eighteen guestrooms. SAKONNET RIVER BRIDGE – Tiverton/Portsmouth RI

RIDOT enlisted Northeast Collaborative Architects, Commonwealth Engineers & Consultants, Inc., Parsons Brinckerhoff and Ventrone Architects to design the new Sakonnet River Bridge. The new bridge replaces a deteriorated steel span built in the 1950s. The new concrete and steel replacement carries Route 24 between Tiverton and Portsmouth. The new bridge is 2,265 feet long and 96 feet wide. A pair of 12-foot lanes in each direction with wide shoulders were designed for motorists. Pedestrians and cyclists may enjoy scenic river overlooks on a 13-foot wide path on the north side of the bridge. For mariners, the bridge features a 65-foot vertical clearance that forms a wide passage beneath the bridge's center span. The bridge includes a number of unique architectural features including LED-based lighting that illuminates the center median light posts and piers, and bronze plaques that depict the official seals for the State of Rhode Island, Tiverton and Portsmouth. The project also calls for the construction of a parking area and boat ramp on the Tiverton side of the bridge. The project earned the National Steel Bridge Alliance Prize Bridge Award.

Originally constructed in 1954, Memorial Student Union served as University of Rhode Island's center for student life. NCA designed a new façade, additional space, and landscape plan that unified the complex. The new exterior features brick, scored masonry, colored tiles and URI Blue windows. The additions form an edifice with a clock tower that distinguishes a new entrance and lobby. The redesign also includes an amphitheater, courtyard bounded by pedestrian ramps and an atrium.

NCA's adaptive reuse of a bank enhanced the secondary entrance with an entablature modeled after the main entrance and replaced the drive-up teller window with period windows. NCA designed a 106-room Marriott Fairfield Inn and Suites hotel in the heart of New Bedford's historic waterfront. The five-story commercial project incorporates Baker-Robinson Oil Works, a granite structure that used to be a whale oil refinery. The hotel's façade combines brick, granite and wood. The Baker-Robinson Oil Works was most likely built 1837-1838 and is one of only five structures known to survive.

The Girl Scouts of Rhode Island enlisted NCA to renovate their camp facility in Newport, RI. PROVIDENCE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER – Providence, RI

NCA restored and expanded the 1928 theater. The stage house, lobby, arcade, proscenium, wall, ceiling and loge were restored. Seating, carpeting, wiring, and fire escapes were replaced. A chandelier was designed for the main dome. A rare organ was installed. A sound system, computerized HVAC system, sprinklers, smoke detection equipment and lobby audiovisual equipment were installed. The commercial expansion included constructing a stage entrance, dressing rooms, green room, security room, production offices and elevator. The project earned the Providence Preservation Society Preservation Award, Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission Preservation Award, AIA/RI Design Award, and AIA/NE Design Award.

THE NATIONAL HOTEL – Block Island, RI

NCA was enlisted to renovate the hotel and transform 60 guest rooms with shared bathrooms into 45 suites with private baths. The design called for recapturing the hotel's Victorian style by reusing period furnishings, as well as restructuring the upper floor, reconstructing the cupola, replacing windows and shutters and rebuilding the original covered porch. NCA brought added value to the boutique hotel project by persuading the client to incorporate commercial space on the ground level beneath the porch. The additional revenue opportunity supported the historic rehabilitation and helped redefine Block Island's commercial center.

Noted 19th century architect Daniel Burnham left an indelible mark on the built environment when he proclaimed, "Make no little plans". However, today's worldwide urban housing shortage forces city planners and architects to think little, very little. 200 to 400 square-foot micro-lofts are the next big housing trend in the United Kingdom, Poland, China, and in American metropolises such as San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Boston, and Providence. Even the big apple is thinking small. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently amended zoning laws and building codes to allow apartments smaller than 400 square feet and commissioned 80 300-square-foot apartments in Manhattan last summer. At home and abroad micro-lofts prove to be innovative housing models that offer access to urban amenities at affordable prices.

WOLFEBORO TOWN HALL – Wolfeboro, NH

NCA restored the Wolfeboro Town Hall in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Boston architect James T. Kelley designed the 12,000 square-foot brick building, originally named Brewster Memorial Hall, in 1890. The Romanesque-revival landmark is regarded as one of New Hampshire's most architecturally significant municipal buildings and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The Town of Wolfeboro was a longtime tenant of the building and purchased the property from the Brewster Trust for $1 in 2004. The project entailed restoring the masonry and roofing, replacing the windows, rebuilding the chimney, re-designing the storefront for office use, bringing the structure up to code, and making the building more energy efficient. The scope also included restoring the Great Hall located on the second floor. Previously closed for decades, the restored Great Hall features new lighting, seating, restrooms and a kitchen. The space will be used for public meetings and community events. Securing funding posed a significant challenge and NCA assisted the Town by preparing promotional drawings and working with the Friends of Wolfeboro Town Hall to help raise over $3 million needed to restore the building. The restoration exemplifies a successful Public-Private partnership.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Blithewold was designed by Kilham and Hopkins in 1907-1908. The English Country Manor style home was constructed of rough stone and features steep pitched roofs with medieval style ornamentation. NCA was selected to restore this landmark museum. The first phase included extensive roofing work, and selective masonry and steel framing restoration.

NCA created a new 186-student dormitory with an administration wing and renovated the adjoining 200-student dormitory in Miley Hall. Walgreen Hall serves as the signature entrance to Salve Regina University and is located on the corner of Narragansett and Ochre Point avenues. Walgreen Hall accommodates first-year students in suite-style living arrangements and also contains a wing dedicated to administrative office space for Campus Life, Career Development and Multicultural Affairs. Housing up to 11 students, each suite in Walgreen Hall shares a lounge/study area and bathroom. The room options include 12 singles, 73 doubles, four triples and four quads. To create a seamless connection between the new and existing buildings, brick and pre-cast paneling and window surrounds that resemble limestone were used for the addition. The renovated lower level features a new courtyard.

Constructed in 1867, Ashton Mill was transformed into lofts with river and parkland views. NCA conducted an adaptive reuse of the mill into a 23-suite boutique hotel. The project reworked the facade to incorporate a two-story wood and glass window wall. A rear annex is distinguished by a detached clapboard façade. Many historical elements remain intact including a beam, front doors, and a cantilevered timber projecting from the building. VETERANS MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM – Providence, RI

Freemasonry reached the height of its popularity in the 1920s. During that era Freemasons built monumental concert halls, libraries, and museums in cities across the nation. The Rhode Island Freemasons commissioned noted architects Osgood & Osgood to design the Veterans Memorial Auditorium as a Grand Masonic complex in 1927. The Great Depression halted construction and the project lay dormant for over a decade. The State of Rhode Island took over the project in the 1940s; however World War II further delayed its completion.

LE CHALET- Newport, RI

Richard Morris Hunt, the Dean of American Architecture, designed Le Chalet on Bellevue Avenue in Newport in 1870. Hunt chose the Stick Style for the 9,700 square-foot summer cottage after garnering significant attention for his Stick Style design of the Griswold House, now the NewportArt Museum. Hunt's original plans for Le Chalet called for an ornate Stick Style edifice, extensive porches, cast iron roof cresting, and a large two-story carriage house. However, these plans, especially the interiors, were believed to be scaled back at the time of construction. Le Chalet had a succession of owners, each of whom made minor alterations to the home. When the clients purchased the property the house had lost significant detail on its east elevation, was in a neglected state and warranted a full renovation.

Mater Ecclesiae is a private Roman Catholic College that was founded in Wakefield, Rhode Island 1991. In 1998, the institution relocated its campus to Greenville, RI on the site of the former St. Aloysius Orphanage. To meet the criteria for Accreditation, Mater Ecclesiae needed to build a new library that would house 50,000 volumes and provide students with computer access, reference section, and lending services.

NCA designed the Boston Golf Clubhouse. Gables, roof overhangs, rafter tails and clapboards reflect Adirondack style. Foundation, chimneys and battered stone walls lend an organic aesthetic. The bag drop, pro shop, offices and locker rooms occupy one building, while the commercial kitchen, bar, grill room, pool room, porch and terrace comprise the other building.

ROCKRY HALL – Newport, RI

Rockry Hall was designed by Seth Bradford in 1890. A fire ravaged the mansion soon after construction. During reconstruction, a neighboring Queen Anne was moved 100 feet and angled into Rockry Hall on the northeast corner. The end product was a mixture of two periods. NCA strengthened the Gothic Revival aspects of the residential project by re-establishing the original building's edges, displaying original quoins, removing concrete parging, and implementing suitable color schemes. Old photographs were used to reconstruct the porte cochere. The porch was reconstructed and breakfast room, garage, and kitchen were added to the first floor. A master bedroom was added to the second floor. The project earned the Newport Historical Society Preservation Award.

The Old Colony Co-Operative Bank was constructed in 1926. In 1993 the lobby was converted into St. Francis Chapel and the upper floors became offices and dorms. NCA converted the structure into a Hampton Inn & Suites. The commercial project included renovating the 50,000 square-foot, 11-story St. Francis Chapel and constructing a new 10-story, 27,000 square-foot addition.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Pelham Court was built in the 1870's. The building was slated for demolition in the 1980s. NCA won a design competition and restored the building to house commercial space. NCA later converted the building into eight luxury suites. A new structure and courtyard were added. As part of the replacement program for I-195, one third of the existing 1930 concrete arch bridge and former highway was preserved, restored, and rededicated as a pedestrian park that acts as the Providence terminus of the East Bay Bike Path. NCA's design includes the restoration of the original granite drawbridge operator's house, bronze flagpole bases, and monumental bronze plaques located on four abutment pylons, and new ornamental bronze railings.

The historic residence was designed by George Champlin Mason in 1885. NCA reconfigured the floor plan to accommodate a gourmet kitchen, breakfast nook, and pantry. The fireplace was rebuilt as a raised cooking hearth that also functions as the focal point of the residential space. The coffered ceiling was designed to line-up with the existing historic structure and the pressed tin ceiling was faux painted to resemble aged copper.
