A Cardines Field Public Outreach Meeting was held recently at the Newport Public Library. Supporters discussed proposed ballpark renovations, improved accessibility, and new locker rooms and restrooms.
Cardines Field is a small urban baseball stadium located in Newport that is believed to be one of the oldest ballparks in the United States. A debate continues as to whether baseball was first played at Cardines Field in 1900 or 1908. Today, the ballpark is home to the historic Sunset League and the Newport Gulls – New England Collegiate Baseball League.
After years of deferred maintenance and intermittent use, NCA was enlisted to create a multi-phased improvement schedule, estimate and proposed additions for ADA updates to the ballpark that would serve as a basis for foundation review and funding. Improvements are slated to begin when a public-private partnership is formed and funding is secured.
